Musings of a Dumb Ass

Is the America I've known and loved for so long really over?? I think a resounding "Yes" is the only answer. I've felt for a very long time we would collapse under the weight of our own laziness and ignorance and each day that passes gives absolution to that end.
Over my lifetime we have silently and eagerly lined up at the recieving window as if there were no tomorrow and supported the formation of each new Governmental handout and program as it came and took the attitude it was necessary for our survival to recieve it, or at least we needed the helping hand, or that we simply deserved it.
The payoff has been the same Government that promoted lack of responsibility and compassion for those who claimed they were unable to be productive in the workplace and should be paid a living sustenance for themselves and all in their household till death do they part, plus subsidy to any other American who wanted it, whether it be to the Farmer, the business owner, the corporate structure, the student, even down to the grocery store with food stamps and the child day care center, not to mention Grandma in the nursing home, now has its' long arm into every life and will never turn loose. That pays credence to that great old country song "That Just About Does It, Don't It?".
Worse further is the ridiculous lines at the clinics and hospitals which if determined by real need would probably dwindle by 75% and even more than that if payment in real terms was required from the recipient. Instead we are encouraged by our Government and each other to expand the situation to bounds that will crush us by itself alone.
We've always been a sucker for the idea of free prosperity and nothing can match the sheer foolishness of our social security program. While in the beginning, the program was defined as 'a little to help the elderly maintain dignity' has grown to something far beyond that, and only about one in a thousand elderly have any conception of the folly of something that self destructive and when questioned will cause the recipient to bristle with anger and loudly proclaim that "Bygod I paid it and I'm taking it" even though they paid in very little when compared to what they get over their lifetime. It has a logical comparison with the Ponzi scheme that Bernie Madoff is doing 150 years in prison for.
So what can be done?
Nothing as far as I can figure.
Unless we all give up what we're getting..... who wants to be first?
